Earthing: It’s like nature’s Wi-Fi (and being barefoot is the password)

Earthing: It’s like nature’s Wi-Fi (and being barefoot is the password)

When was the last time you stood sole to Earth and let Mama Nature heal your body, mind and spirit?

Have you ever noticed that tingling, grounding sensation when you kick off your Birkenstocks and let your feet touch the grass, dirt, or sand?

Well, that’s called Earthing (also commonly known as grounding) and when we tell you it’s the closest thing to magic on the human plane of existence, we mean it.

Earthing? What the…?

Earthing refers to the practice of connecting with the Earth's natural electric charge by walking barefoot on natural surfaces.

Grounding allows our bodies to soak up Earth's natural electrons. As we go about our day, our bodies produce "free radicals" — little particles that can harm our cells.

But when we touch the Earth, like walking barefoot on grass, we absorb some of these beneficial electrons which neutralise these harmful particles.

Think of it as recharging your body with Earth's natural energy, much like our ancestors did when they were always in touch with the ground.

Earthing isn't just a buzzword or modern spiritual practice. It's a genuine concept with real science (ehem – magic!) behind it.

Why you should take a walk on the (shoeless) wild side

Aside from the sheer bliss of feeling the world beneath your feet, there are some surprising health benefits:

Reduce Stress: Direct contact with the Earth has been shown to help reduce stress and improve sleep. It's like Mother Nature's way of wrapping you in a warm hug.
Natural painkiller: Some studies suggest grounding might reduce chronic pain by neutralising inflammation-causing free radicals through direct contact with the Earth's negative charge.
Increases the feel-good vibes: Feeling a little untethered? Sad? Anxious? A little Earth underfoot might just give your spirits a natural lift.

How to ground yourself

No matter where you are, you’re never far from a place you can ground yourself (unless you’re in a plane – that’s like, the only excuse you’d have for not going and having a grounding sesh once you’ve finished reading this email).

You don't need a vast forest or a secluded beach. Just a patch of grass or a heck even a dirt pathway will do. Then you:

  1. Take off your shoes (and socks).
  2. Stand barefoot on the ground – it needs to be grass, dirt, or sand.
  3. Just stand there for a few minutes – close your eyes if it helps.
  4. Take deep breaths and really focus on how it feels to connect the soles of your feet to Mama Earth.
  5. And you’re doing it – you’re Earthing!

If you can’t stand for long periods of time, lying on the ground or submerging yourself in natural water also works – just as long as your bare skin is in contact with the elements.

Start with short sessions, and watch how it feels. As you connect with the Earth, you might just find yourself connecting with a deeper, calmer side of you.

Remember: the best things in life are often the simplest. So next time you find yourself needing a little pick-me-up, ditch the shoes, find your nearest slice of nature, and let Mother Nature do the rest.

Stay grounded and connected 🙏🏻,
