You’re not lost; you’re just taking a detour!

You’re not lost; you’re just taking a detour!
Have you ever set off with a perfect plan, only to watch it unravel before your very eyes? Welcome to the real world of adventure – where the unexpected should always be expected (and embraced).

It goes like this:

You're headed for a solo weekend hiking and camping adventure, and suddenly, Google Maps has done you dirty (or maybe, your map-following skills need a bit of work), and you’re 30 kilometres in the opposite direction to where you need to be.

The sun is starting to slip below the horizon, and you want to pitch your tent while there’s still some light. So, you pivot and find the closest campsite.

Then, you open up your tent to find there’s a whole bunch of mould. You’re getting a bit grumpy now – this was supposed to be a fun, relaxing weekend.

So you think to yourself, “A quick walk will do me good.” You put on your hiking boots only to realise the sole on the right boot has almost completely detached. You groan in frustration.

“OK, I’m just hangry. All I need are some snacks.” So you go searching for the packet of Sea Salt & Vinegar Kettle chips you’ve been craving … only to find you forgot to pack them.

And then… it starts to rain.

It might seem like your adventure has turned into an utter disaster, but here’s the thing: the best adventures begin where plans end.

With a quick scan of your surroundings, you realise the new campsite is actually pretty bloody picturesque. And you have the campsite all to yourself. Nice.

And yes, your hiking boots have met an untimely end. But use this as an opportunity to take it easy, explore closer to camp, soak in nature and just enjoy the solitude.

Mould in your tent? It’s not ideal, but it’ll be nice to sleep under the stars (once the rain stops), experiencing the starry night sky in all its beauty – something you’ve never actually done.

And the forgotten snacks? Yeah, that one sucks. Been there, hated that. We don’t have any way of turning that one into a positive. All we can say is RIP yummy chippies. They’ll be waiting for you when you get home.

The point is, adventures gone rogue aren't something to dread. It's the universe's way of adding a little spice to our travels. So next time your plans go off-course, don't stress. Embrace the chaos. After all, the most unforgettable adventures are usually the ones we didn’t plan on taking.

Here's to the unplanned, the spontaneous, and the outright unpredictable. Who knows? Your next misadventure could be the best one yet.

Safe travels (or should we say, adventurous detours),
