A No-BS Guide to Journaling

A No-BS Guide to Journaling
Does it sometimes feel like your brain is a browser with too many tabs open? Journaling is like a way to close the tabs and restart your mind (just with more introspection and less panic over unsaved work).

Whether you think you’re the next Hemingway or someone who considers grocery lists the height of literary achievement, journaling is for everyone.

It’s not just about keeping a diary where you confess your deepest secrets or doodle your and your crush's initials in a heart (don’t lie, we’ve all been there).

It's a way to explore your thoughts, work through emotions, and capture your best and brightest ideas. It's like having a conversation with yourself on paper, helping you make sense of life's ups and downs and painting a picture of who you are.

Below, we’ve put together 30 journal prompts to spark not just creativity, but also a bit of self-discovery, silliness and maybe the odd existential crisis (in a good way, we think…)

30 Journal Prompts to Kickstart Your Brain

  1. What’s the weirdest dream you’ve had recently? What do you think it means?
  2. If you could have a no-holds-barred conversation with your 12-year-old self, what advice would you give?
  3. What’s your most unpopular opinion? Why do you stand by it?
  4. If today was a colour, what would it be and why?
  5. Write a thank-you note for a past mistake. What did it teach you?
  6. What does your ideal day look like from the moment you wake up to when you go to sleep?
  7. What scares you? Like, really, scares you?
  8. If your life was a genre, what would it be (e.g., comedy, tragedy, thriller) and why?
  9. What’s a habit you’re proud of breaking or want to break?
  10. Describe a moment you felt utterly at peace. What made it special?
  11. What’s a piece of advice you often give but find hard to take yourself?
  12. Draft the blurb for the book of your life. Would you read it?
  13. What’s something you’re curious about but have never explored?
  14. Reflect on a compliment that made you see yourself differently.
  15. Write about the last time you were out-of-this-world happy. What happened?
  16. If you could teleport to anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
  17. What’s a lesson you learned the hard way?
  18. Write a letter to someone who changed your life (for better or worse).
  19. What are three things you want to achieve next year, and why?
  20. What’s a tradition you’d like to start?
  21. If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?
  22. What’s something that always brings you joy, no matter how small?
  23. Describe a random act of kindness you’ve experienced or want to offer.
  24. What are you most grateful for at this moment?
  25. Who do you trust most? Why?
  26. Describe yourself using the first 10 words that come to mind. After that, write out 10 words that you’d like to use to describe yourself.
  27. Finish this sentence: “My life would be incomplete without …”
  28. What are your favourite hobbies? Why?
  29. Are you the person you thought you’d become when you were a kid?
  30. What do you look forward to most in the future?

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to journal. Your notebook is judgement-free – unless it starts talking back to you, in which case, you’ve got a bestseller on your hands.

So pick up a pen, get vulnerable, and let those words flow.

Until next time,
